Airport HistoryEst. 1966

Auckland's airport traces back to land leased to the Auckland Aero Club in 1928, but the modern facility at Māngere was purpose-built from 1960 and officially opened with a grand air pageant over Auckland Anniversary weekend in January 1966. It has since grown into New Zealand's largest and busiest airport, notable today as the busiest single-runway airport in Oceania.

✦Auckland Airport is currently the busiest single-runway airport in all of Oceania, despite handling around 18.9 million passengers a year as of 2025.
✦Before the modern airport opened, Whenuapai Airport (a former RNZAF base) served as Auckland's civilian air hub starting in 1948.

Auckland Aero Club Leases Māngere Land

The Auckland Aero Club leases land at Māngere to house three aircraft, the earliest aviation use of the site that would later become the international airport.

1966
Official Opening

The purpose-built Auckland International Airport officially opens with a 'grand air pageant' over Auckland Anniversary weekend, January 29-31, featuring a 2,591-meter runway; the first flight had departed in November 1965.

First Boeing 747 Service

Qantas launches the first Boeing 747 service to the airport on December 8, marking the start of the widebody jet era at Auckland.

Runway Extended

The runway is extended westward to 3,292 meters, enabling longer-haul international services.

New International Terminal Built

A new international terminal is constructed, later renamed the Jean Batten Terminal in 1987 after the pioneering New Zealand aviator.

Pier B Opens With A380-Capable Gates

A 5,500 square meter Pier B extension opens with two gates capable of handling the Airbus A380.

Record Flooding Closes Terminals

Record rainfall in January floods both terminals, forcing a 24-hour closure and highlighting the airport's exposure to extreme weather.

$3.9 Billion Domestic Terminal Plan Announced

A major NZ$3.9 billion replacement plan for the domestic terminal is announced, aiming to consolidate operations and expand capacity.
