Opened in February 1979 to relieve overcrowding at Taipei's Songshan Airport, Taoyuan International Airport opened as Chiang Kai-shek International Airport and quickly became Taiwan's principal gateway. It was renamed Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport in 2006 amid a broader wave of 'Taiwan localization' renamings, a change that drew political controversy at the time. The airport has weathered two major fatal accidents in its history — China Airlines Flight 676 in 1998 and Singapore Airlines Flight 006 in 2000 — and has since grown into one of the busiest hubs in the Asia-Pacific region, home to China Airlines and EVA Air. A third terminal, planned since the mid-2010s, has been under construction for completion around 2026.
The airport opened on 26 February 1979 with Terminal 1, built to relieve congestion at the older Taipei Songshan Airport.
On 16 February 1998, China Airlines Flight 676, an Airbus A300, crashed while attempting to land, killing 202 people including some on the ground.
Terminal 2's South Concourse opened on 29 July 2000; later that year, on 31 October, Singapore Airlines Flight 006 crashed on a closed runway during takeoff in a typhoon, killing 83 of the 179 aboard.
The North Concourse of Terminal 2 opened on 21 January 2005, expanding the airport's passenger handling capacity.
On 6 September 2006, the airport was officially renamed from Chiang Kai-shek International Airport to Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, part of a broader renaming effort that was politically contested.
A design was chosen for a new Terminal 3 in October 2015, intended to substantially expand capacity; the project has faced a long construction timeline, with completion expected around 2026.
