Airport HistoryEst. 1998
Kuala Lumpur International Airport opened on 27 June 1998 in Sepang, replacing the increasingly congested Subang Airport as Malaysia's primary international gateway. Designed by Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa, the terminal deliberately blends Islamic geometric motifs with the surrounding tropical rainforest, most famously through an actual forest garden enclosed within the main terminal building. The airport grew into the home hub of Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia and now ranks among the world's most-connected airports for transit traffic. A second terminal, KLIA2, opened in 2014 as one of the largest dedicated low-cost-carrier terminals in the world.
Groundbreaking took place on 1 June 1993 after the Malaysian government concluded that Subang Airport could not meet future demand; the new airport was built on cleared rainforest and former plantation land in Sepang.
KLIA officially opened on 27 June 1998, inaugurated by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong shortly before Malaysia hosted the Commonwealth Games, and replaced Subang as the country's main international airport.
Commercial operations were moved from the old Subang Airport to KLIA in a single overnight changeover, with Subang subsequently repurposed for general aviation and later a low-cost domestic role.
A new low-cost-carrier terminal, KLIA2, opened on 2 May 2014 to replace the original LCC Terminal, becoming the primary base for AirAsia and one of the largest purpose-built budget-airline terminals in the world.
Malaysia Airports announced in February 2023 that the original terminal and KLIA2 would be rebranded as 'KLIA Terminal 1' and 'KLIA Terminal 2' respectively, unifying the airport's identity under a single KLIA name.
