Airport HistoryEst. 1985
Soekarno-Hatta International Airport opened in 1985 to replace the increasingly overcrowded Kemayoran Airport as Jakarta's main gateway, and is named after Indonesia's founding president Sukarno and vice-president Mohammad Hatta. It has grown into one of Southeast Asia's busiest airports and, following a 2024 state-airport merger, is now operated by InJourney Airports.
Construction begins following a Canadian-led feasibility study from the mid-1970s, aiming to replace the space-constrained Kemayoran Airport.
The airport opens on May 1, 1985, inaugurated by President Suharto, with Terminal 1 providing initial capacity for around 9 million passengers a year.
Terminal 2 opens in 1991 and international operations, previously split with Halim Perdanakusuma Airport, are consolidated at Soekarno-Hatta.
An expanded Terminal 3 ('Terminal 3 Ultimate') opens, substantially increasing the airport's overall handling capacity.
A third runway enters service, adding capacity to relieve congestion at one of the world's busiest airports.
Annual traffic reaches 49.08 million passengers, making Soekarno-Hatta Southeast Asia's third-busiest airport.
State operators Angkasa Pura I and Angkasa Pura II merge in September 2024 to form InJourney Airports, one of the world's largest airport-operating groups, taking over Soekarno-Hatta's management.
Wikipedia and multiple 2024 business-press reports (Jakarta Globe, CAPA, Aviation Week) on the Angkasa Pura I/II merger. The InJourney Airports restructuring is recent (2024) and organizational details may continue to evolve.
