History
Qatar Airways was established in November 1993 and began flying in January 1994 as a small regional carrier; it was fundamentally relaunched in 1997 with backing from the Qatari royal family after Qatar withdrew from the multi-state carrier Gulf Air. The airline became wholly state-owned in 2013, moved its hub to the newly opened Hamad International Airport in 2014, and was the global launch customer for the Airbus A350 that same year.
Current Operations
Qatar Airways operates a long-haul-focused global network from its Doha hub, flying to roughly 170-plus international destinations across six continents with a fleet mixing narrowbody Airbus A320-family and Boeing 737 MAX jets with widebody A330s, A350s, 777s and 787s. Wholly owned by the State of Qatar and a oneworld member since 2013, the airline has continued expanding its influence through investments — including a stake in Australia's Virgin Australia acquired in 2025 — and sponsorship deals such as its UEFA Champions League partnership running through 2030.
