Sharjah International Airport opened on January 1, 1977, replacing the historic RAF Sharjah airfield that had served as the first airport in the UAE and the wider Gulf region since 1932. It later became the home base of Air Arabia, the Middle East's first low-cost carrier, and today ranks as one of the region's busiest cargo and passenger hubs.
RAF Sharjah opens, becoming the first airport in the UAE and the Gulf Cooperation Council region, used originally by Imperial Airways.
RAF Sharjah ceases operations on December 14, 1971; its old terminal and tower are later preserved as the Al Mahatta Museum.
The current Sharjah International Airport opens on January 1, 1977, on a new site to accommodate development pressure on the old airfield from the growing city.
During Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm (1990-1991), the US Air Force's 926th Tactical Fighter Group operates A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft from Sharjah.
Tajikistan Airlines Flight 3183 crashes on approach, killing 85 of 86 people on board.
Air Arabia, the Middle East's first low-cost carrier, is established with its home base and freight center at Sharjah International Airport.
