Airport HistoryEst. 2000

Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport opened on 30 December 2000, replacing the older dual civil-military Jianqiao Airport that had become too constrained to expand. It was formally designated an international airport in March 2004 once customs and immigration facilities were completed, and grew rapidly through successive terminal expansions to become one of mainland China's busiest hubs and a base for Air China, China Eastern, China Southern, Hainan Airlines, Xiamen Airlines and low-cost carrier Loong Air. The airport welcomed world leaders in September 2016 when Hangzhou hosted the G20 summit.

✦Terminal 4's lotus-flower-inspired architecture is meant to evoke Hangzhou's West Lake, a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape near the city center.

✦World leaders including then-US President Barack Obama and Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived at Xiaoshan for the September 2016 G20 summit, one of the highest-profile diplomatic events the airport has hosted.

✦Low-cost carrier Loong Air is headquartered on airport grounds.

✦The airport replaced the older Jianqiao Airport, a dual civil-military field that had become too small and too close to central Hangzhou to expand further.

✦The airport connects to downtown Hangzhou via three separate metro lines (1, 7 and 19).

2000

Airport opens

Phase I construction, begun in July 1997, is completed and the airport opens for traffic on 30 December 2000.

2004

Formally designated international

The airport is formally designated an international airport in March 2004 following completion of dedicated customs and immigration infrastructure.

2010

Terminal 2 and first intercontinental route

Terminal 2 opens on 3 June 2010 to handle international and regional flights, and on 8 May 2010 KLM launches the airport's first intercontinental route, to Amsterdam.

2012

Terminal 3 and second runway open

A second domestic terminal (Terminal 3) and a new 3,600-meter second runway both open on 30 December 2012.

2016

Hosts arrivals for the G20 Hangzhou summit

The airport handles arrivals of world leaders, including then-US President Barack Obama and Chinese President Xi Jinping, for the September 2016 G20 summit held in Hangzhou.

2022

Terminal 4 opens

A 720,000 sq m Terminal 4, with architecture inspired by lotus flowers and West Lake, opens on 8 September 2022 as part of a Phase III expansion supporting the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou.

2025

Passenger traffic tops 50 million

The airport handles roughly 50.5 million passengers in 2025, ranking as the 7th-busiest airport in mainland China.
