Noi Bai International Airport opened in January 1978 just south of the Phúc Yên Air Base, initially serving only flights to and from communist-bloc countries during Vietnam's early post-war period. It has since become Vietnam Airlines' main hub and, following the 2015 opening of a Japanese-funded Terminal 2, one of Southeast Asia's fastest-growing gateways, with the Hanoi-Ho Chi Minh City route ranking among the busiest domestic air corridors in the world.
Noi Bai International Airport opens on January 2, 1978, near Phúc Yên Air Base, with civil operations initially restricted largely to flights from China, East Germany, and the Soviet Union.
