History
Korean Air traces its origins to the state-run Korean Air Lines, established in June 1962; the Hanjin Group acquired and privatized the carrier in March 1969, forming the basis of the modern airline. It became a founding member of the SkyTeam alliance in 2000 and has grown into South Korea's flag carrier, majority-owned by Hanjin Group through Hanjin KAL Corporation, in which Delta Air Lines also holds a minority stake.
Current Operations
Korean Air operates from its main hub at Incheon International Airport, with additional bases at Gimpo, Jeju and Gimhae, serving over 120 international destinations plus domestic routes with a fleet of Boeing 787s, Airbus A350s and A380s alongside narrowbody jets. In a landmark industry shift, Korean Air completed acquisition of a controlling stake in rival Asiana Airlines in December 2024 and has set 17 December 2026 as the date for full operational integration, after which the Asiana brand will be retired and folded into Korean Air. The carrier unveiled its first major corporate rebrand since 1984 in March 2025 as part of this integration.
