Hongqiao is one of China's oldest airports, opening for civilian use in the 1920s and later drawn into military conflict during the 1930s Sino-Japanese confrontations in Shanghai. Rebuilt after World War II, it served as Shanghai's primary airport until Pudong International Airport opened in 1999, after which it refocused on domestic and regional service, gaining a major new Terminal 2 in 2010.
Construction, begun in 1921, results in the airfield opening for mixed civilian use in May 1923.
Chinese Air Force fighters operate from the airfield during the January 28 Shanghai Incident, engaging Japanese aircraft.
The 'Oyama Incident' at Hongqiao helps trigger the outbreak of the Battle of Shanghai; the airfield subsequently comes under Japanese occupation during the war.
