Dalian's airport occupies a site with a colorful history: a marsh nicknamed 'smelly waters' that became a Qing-era racecourse before Japan converted it into an airport in the 1920s during its colonial control of the Liaodong Peninsula. Rebuilt for civilian use in 1973 and expanded five times since 1984, it is now the busiest airport in Northeast China, though its close-in urban location has left it at capacity since 2016, prompting construction of a new offshore replacement airport.

✦The airport's Chinese name, Zhoushuizi, derives from a description meaning 'smelly waters,' referencing the insect-infested marsh that originally occupied the site before it became a horse-racing course and later an airfield.

Japanese-Built Airport Opens

Following Japan's control of the Liaodong Peninsula after the 1904–05 Russo-Japanese War, Japanese authorities convert the former Zhoushuizi racecourse into an airport, opened in 1927.

PLA Air Force Takes Control

After a decade of Soviet control following Japan's 1945 surrender, the People's Liberation Army Air Force assumes control of the airport in May 1955.

Civilian Service Begins

The airport transitions to civilian operations with a 2,040-meter runway, a small staff of 37, and just 1,961 passengers in its first year.

1984
First Major Expansion

The airport begins the first of five major expansion phases (1984, 1992–93, 1999, 2005, 2011–12) to keep pace with growing civil aviation demand.

13 Million Passengers

Following the fifth expansion phase, the airport serves over 13 million passengers, ranking 15th nationally in China.

Airport Reaches Capacity

Urban encroachment around the airport limits further physical expansion, and the facility reaches its practical operating capacity.

Nearly 20 Million Passengers, New Airport Underway

The airport handles 19,787,716 passengers, ranking as the busiest in Northeast China (27th nationally), while construction continues on its planned replacement, Dalian Jinzhouwan International Airport, being built on an artificial island.
