Airport HistoryEst. 1989

Changsha Huanghua International Airport opened in 1989 to replace the dual-use Datuopu Airport, serving the Hunan provincial capital, and has expanded through several major terminal and runway projects into one of central China's busiest air hubs. Its second runway, completed in 2017, is rated to handle the Airbus A380.

✦Changsha's second runway is rated 4F, the highest ICAO classification, meaning it can technically handle the Airbus A380 even though the aircraft has not operated scheduled service there.
✦The airport's 2011 Terminal 2 was, by floor area, one of the largest single airport terminal buildings in mainland China at the time of its opening.

Airport Opens

Changsha Huanghua International Airport opens on August 29, 1989, replacing the older dual-use Datuopu Airport; construction had begun in June 1986 following State Council approval in 1984.

2000
Terminal 1-A Opens

A 34,000-square-meter terminal building, Terminal 1-A, opens on October 28, 2000, with capacity for 4.6 million passengers a year.

2011
Terminal 2 Opens

A much larger, 212,000-square-meter Terminal 2 opens on July 19, 2011, becoming, by area, one of the largest airport terminals in mainland China at the time.

2014
First Intercontinental Route

China Southern Airlines launches Changsha's first intercontinental service, to Frankfurt, on June 23, 2014.

2017
Second Runway Opens

A second, 3,800-meter runway opens on March 30, 2017, achieving 4F classification capable of handling Airbus A380 operations.

2018
Terminal 1 Renovation Completes

A renovated and expanded Terminal 1 reopens on May 18, 2018, with capacity for six million passengers a year.

2024
31 Million Annual Passengers

Annual traffic reaches approximately 31.2 million passengers, ranking Changsha as China's 12th-busiest airport.
