Airport HistoryEst. 1989

Shenyang Taoxian International Airport opened on April 16, 1989, after construction began in 1985, replacing the historic Dongta Airport (in use since 1921) as the main gateway to Shenyang in China's northeast. It has since grown into a hub for major Chinese carriers and one of the busiest airports in northeastern China.

✦The airport replaced Dongta Airport, which had served Shenyang since 1921 and was one of the oldest airports in China.
✦It is served directly by the Shenyang Tram network (lines 2 and 6), an unusual light-rail connection for a Chinese regional airport.
1985
Construction Begins

Construction of the new airport at Taoxian begins on July 1, 1985, intended to replace the aging Dongta Airport in central Shenyang.

1989
Airport Opens

Shenyang Taoxian International Airport opens on April 16, 1989, becoming the main hub for the newly formed China Northern Airlines.

2012
First Intercontinental Route Launched

Lufthansa begins the airport's first intercontinental service, flying to Frankfurt, in April 2012.

2016
Frankfurt Route Suspended

Lufthansa discontinues its Shenyang-Frankfurt service on October 28, 2016.

2018
Frankfurt Route Relaunched

Lufthansa relaunches its Shenyang-Frankfurt flights on March 27, 2018.

2023
Passenger Traffic Recovery

The airport handles 20.56 million passengers in 2023, ranking as the 23rd-busiest airport in China amid post-pandemic recovery.
