Gimhae International Airport serves the Busan-Gyeongnam region as a joint civil-military airfield that traces its roots to a Korean War-era airbase. It converted to full civilian international operation in the 1970s and grew steadily through the 1990s and 2000s into Korea's second-busiest airport, though it now operates well beyond its original design capacity, hemmed in by mountains and the city. A long-planned successor airport on Gadeokdo Island is under construction to relieve the pressure.
Commercial air traffic shifted to the Gimhae site from the city's old airport on August 1, 1976, with the facility operated jointly by Korea Airports Corporation and the Republic of Korea Air Force.
A dedicated domestic terminal was completed in May 1983, expanding capacity as air travel demand in the Busan area grew.
Korean Air began international long-haul service to Honolulu in October 1992, marking an early milestone in the airport's international expansion.
On April 15, 2002, Air China Flight 129, a Boeing 767 arriving from Beijing, struck a hillside near the airport in poor weather during approach, killing 129 of the 166 people aboard — one of the deadliest air disasters in South Korean history.
A new international terminal opened October 31, 2007, inaugurated by President Roh Moo-hyun, seven months after Lufthansa launched the airport's first European route to Munich.
