Airport HistoryEst. 1991

Xi'an Xianyang International Airport opened in 1991 to replace the smaller, aging Xiguan Airport closer to the city center, giving the historic city of Xi'an — the eastern terminus of the ancient Silk Road — a modern aviation gateway. Positioned by Chinese planners as one of the country's major regional hub airports, it has expanded repeatedly to keep pace with Xi'an's growth as a technology and logistics center, adding a third terminal and second runway in 2012 and a vast new Terminal 5 in February 2025. It now serves as a hub for China Eastern Airlines and Hainan Airlines and is positioned as a key node on China's air links to Europe and Central Asia.
