Airport HistoryEst. 1997

Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport opened in 1997 to replace the older Dongjiao Airport, and its IATA code CGO derives from the city's former romanized name, Chengchow. Boosted by the 2010 arrival of a massive Foxconn manufacturing complex nearby, the airport transformed into one of China's leading air-cargo hubs, anchored by Cargolux, while also becoming central China's busiest passenger airport following Terminal 2's opening in 2015.

Construction Begins

Construction of the new airport begins to replace the aging, capacity-constrained Dongjiao Airport serving Zhengzhou.

Airport Opens

The airport opens on August 28, 1997, with a 45,900-square-meter terminal and a 3,400-meter runway designed for 3.8 million annual passengers.

2007
Terminal 1 Renovation

An expanded and renovated Terminal 1, covering 128,000 square meters, opens on December 29, 2007, to accommodate rising passenger demand.

Foxconn Complex Spurs Cargo Growth

Foxconn launches a major electronics manufacturing complex near the airport, driving a dramatic expansion of air cargo operations and establishing Zhengzhou as a key logistics hub for electronics exports.

Terminal 2 Opens

A 485,000-square-meter Terminal 2 opens on December 19, 2015, featuring an X-shaped layout with four piers, including a dedicated international pier; the airport becomes central China's busiest that year.

Major Cargo Hub Status

The airport ranks sixth nationally in China for cargo throughput, operating around 70 all-cargo routes connecting 32 countries and 73 cities, with Cargolux operating a primary hub there; passenger traffic reaches roughly 29.2 million.
