Qingdao Jiaodong is one of China's newest major hubs, opening in August 2021 to replace the older, capacity-constrained Liuting Airport in a single, tightly choreographed overnight operational switch. Its distinctive five-pointed 'starfish' terminal, built for up to 35 million annual passengers and capable of handling A380-size aircraft, made it the largest airport in Shandong province from its first day of operation.

✦The terminal's roof, spanning 223,000 square meters with five concourses radiating from a central hub, gives the building a distinctive starfish-like shape visible from the air.
✦The switch from the old Liuting Airport to the new Jiaodong Airport was executed as a single overnight operation rather than a phased transition, a logistically complex feat for an airport of this size.

Project Approved

China's authorities formally approve the new Qingdao airport project in December 2013, to replace the aging, land-locked Liuting Airport.

2015
Groundbreaking

Construction officially begins with a groundbreaking ceremony in June 2015.

2017
Full-Scale Construction

Full building work across the airfield and terminal begins in April 2017, following the terminal's first steel component being hoisted in June 2016.

2020
Terminal Completion Acceptance

The terminal building and civil aviation works pass completion acceptance in June 2020, after large-scale interior fit-out began in 2019.

2021
Grand Opening and Overnight Transfer

The airport opens to the public on August 12, 2021. All flight operations are transferred from Liuting Airport to the new site in a single coordinated overnight operation, with the last Liuting departure followed by the sequential shutdown of its runway, terminal and tower lights.

2025
Nearly 27 Million Passengers

The airport handles 26.9 million passengers and over 192,000 takeoffs and landings, establishing itself as the largest airport in Shandong province and a major regional hub.
