Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport opened in October 1991 to serve the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, whose explosive growth since the 1980s transformed a fishing town into a global manufacturing and technology hub. The airport's Terminal 3, opened in 2013 and designed by architect Massimiliano Fuksas, gave Shenzhen one of the most architecturally distinctive terminal buildings in the world, widely compared in shape to a manta ray. A dedicated ferry terminal links the airport directly to Hong Kong and Macau, an intermodal arrangement uncommon among major airports. Today Bao'an ranks among mainland China's busiest airports and is a primary hub for Shenzhen Airlines and China Southern Airlines.
