Airport HistoryEst. 1939

Tianjin's airport was founded in November 1939 and earned the nickname 'Cradle of New China's Civil Aviation' after hosting the first civilian flight of the People's Republic on 1 May 1950. Upgraded to international status in 1996 and folded into the Capital Airports Holding group in 2002, it became a major industrial aviation site when Airbus opened its first Chinese A320 final assembly line there in 2008, and today operates two terminals connected to the Tianjin Metro, handling nearly 20 million passengers in 2025.

1996

International Status and Renaming

The airport is upgraded to international flight status and renamed Tianjin Binhai International Airport in October 1996.

2002

Joins Capital Airports Holding

The airport merges into Capital Airports Holding Company in December 2002, aligning its management with Beijing Capital and other major Chinese airports.

2008

Airbus A320 Final Assembly Line Opens

Airbus's first final assembly line outside Europe, producing A320-family aircraft, begins operations at Tianjin, a landmark industrial milestone for Chinese commercial aviation.

2009

Second Runway Completed

A second runway is completed in May 2009 as passenger traffic is projected to exceed ten million; the terminal is subsequently enlarged to 116,000 square metres with 47 jet bridges.

2014

Terminal 2 and Metro Station Open

Terminal 2 opens on 28 August 2014, the same day Binhai International Airport Station opens on Tianjin Metro Line 2, giving the airport a direct rail connection to the city.

2017

A330 Completion and Delivery Center

Airbus completes an A330 Completion and Delivery Center at the airport by year-end, expanding its role in Airbus's Chinese production and delivery operations.

2025

Nearly 20 Million Passengers

The airport handles 19,862,196 passengers, ranking as China's 26th-busiest airport, operating around 120 routes to 97 cities in the winter-spring season.
