Airport HistoryEst. 1988
New Chitose Airport opened in 1988 to replace the adjacent original Chitose Airport, which had handled passenger flights since 1963, and now serves as Sapporo's and Hokkaido's principal international gateway. Built alongside the Japan Air Self-Defense Force's Chitose Air Base, with which it shares interconnected taxiways, it became Japan's first 24-hour airport in 1994 and has since undergone major domestic and international terminal expansions, ranking among Japan's busiest and most improved airports in recent Skytrax assessments.
New Chitose Airport opens on July 20, 1988, replacing the adjacent Chitose Airport (which had served passenger flights since 1963), initially under the IATA code SPK before later changing to CTS.
New Chitose becomes Japan's first airport to offer 24-hour operations, though nighttime flights are later limited due to noise concerns.
The airport receives a new VIP lounge and upgraded facilities ahead of hosting international delegations for the G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit.
A dedicated international terminal opens on March 26, 2010, expanding the airport's capacity to handle overseas flights.
A major second terminal, roughly doubling overall capacity, is completed in August 2019, giving the airport a semicircular 18-gate domestic terminal and a smaller 8-gate international terminal.
Skytrax ranks New Chitose 49th among the world's airports and names it "World's Most Improved Airport," up from 64th globally in 2018.
