A quick loop through central Sapporo — Odori Park, the Sapporo Clock Tower, and the Sapporo Beer Museum — all within a short walk of Sapporo Station, about 35–40 minutes away by JR rapid train.

Inside the airport

New Chitose's Oasis Park (4F, domestic terminal) has Japan's only airport with a natural hot-spring onsen, plus Royce' Chocolate World (watch chocolate being made behind glass), a movie theater, and Doraemon/Hello Kitty attractions on 3F Smile Road — genuinely worth a few hours even without leaving the building.

The Air Terminal Hotel sits directly connected to the domestic terminal (3F) for a fast turnaround, and the onsen itself offers overnight stays from roughly ¥5,000 if all you need is a few hours' sleep — but note the main terminal closes overnight (roughly 22:30–05:00), so you can't just camp out in the gate area.

Japan allows visa-free entry (typically up to 90 days) for most Western passport holders — US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia, South Korea, and others — but not every nationality qualifies, so confirm your own before counting on it; immigration at CTS's international terminal can also add time.

Transit visa requirements vary by nationality and change frequently. Always verify with the official embassy or consulate of Japan before travel.

Practical Tips for Your CTS Layover

Use left-luggage storage at New Chitose Airport if you plan to leave the terminal — most airports offer coin lockers or staffed storage near arrivals.

Get a Japan eSIM before your layover so you have data for maps and translation the moment you land.

Download offline maps for Sapporo in advance — useful if you leave the terminal and connectivity is patchy.

Always allow at least 3 hours buffer before your next departure when leaving the airport — immigration queues are unpredictable.
