Airline Identity
History
Finnair began in 1923 as Aero O/Y, founded by consul Bruno Lucander with technical and financial backing from Germany's Junkers Flugzeugwerke, and flew its first route from Helsinki to Tallinn in March 1924. It rebuilt its European network after the Second World War, adopted the Finnair name in 1953, and became known for pioneering short polar routings between Europe and Asia, including the first nonstop Western Europe–Japan service via the North Pole in 1983. Finnair joined the Oneworld alliance in 1999.
Current Operations
Finnair operates a European short/medium-haul network alongside long-haul Asian and North American routes from its Helsinki hub, historically leveraging Helsinki's northern location for efficient one-stop Europe–Asia connections — though Russian airspace closures since 2022 have lengthened many of its Asian routings. It serves over 80 destinations in more than 35 countries with an all-Airbus mainline fleet (A320-family, A330, A350) supplemented by regional aircraft operated by Nordic Regional Airlines. The Finnish state remains Finnair's majority shareholder (around 56%), and the airline has trimmed some domestic routes in favor of ground transport in recent years.
