Airport HistoryEst. 1933
Valencia Airport, in the suburb of Manises, opened in 1933 as a small aerodrome and began scheduled service the following year on the Madrid–Valencia route. Rebuilt and expanded repeatedly since — including a solar-powered terminal in 1983 and two further extensions in 2007 and 2012 — it is operated by Spain's state airport authority Aena and now handles more than 10 million passengers a year, though it briefly lost its only long-haul link when Delta's transatlantic New York route ended in 2012.
The aerodrome at Manises, planned since a 1927 national airports act, officially opens in March 1933, having been sited there instead of the originally proposed location near La Albufera.
The airport gains customs status and, on 1 September 1934, its first scheduled flight opens the Madrid–Valencia route.
Runway 12/30, the airport's first paved runway, is completed, with a second runway (04/22) finished by 1949 as postwar infrastructure work continues.
A new terminal opens featuring early solar-panel installations for on-site power generation, a notable environmental feature for its time.
Coinciding with Valencia hosting the America's Cup, the airport opens a regional-flights terminal and a private-aviation facility and lengthens its main runway by 50 metres.
Delta Air Lines launches a seasonal Boeing 757 service to New York–JFK, Valencia's first-ever transatlantic connection; the route is discontinued in 2012 due to weak demand and fuel costs.
A second major extension opens in July, adding twenty check-in counters and a modernised baggage-handling system.
Air Transat begins seasonal service to Montreal in June, restoring intercontinental connectivity for the airport.
