History
Air Canada's predecessor, Trans-Canada Air Lines, was created by federal legislation in April 1937 as a subsidiary of Canadian National Railway to establish transcontinental air service; it was renamed Air Canada in 1965. The airline was fully privatized by 1989, acquired rival Canadian Airlines in 2000, and filed for bankruptcy protection in 2003, emerging restructured in 2004. Air Canada is a founding member of Star Alliance, which it joined in 1997.
Current Operations
Air Canada operates a global network mixing domestic and transborder short/medium-haul flying with long-haul international routes, anchored by three hubs at Toronto Pearson, Montréal–Trudeau and Vancouver, reaching well over 200 destinations across some 47 countries. Its mixed Airbus/Boeing fleet spans narrowbody aircraft for domestic and regional flying to widebodies for long-haul international service. Publicly traded and independently owned (subject to Canadian ownership requirements), the airline experienced a major flight attendants' strike in August 2025 that briefly disrupted tens of thousands of daily flights before a tentative labor agreement was reached.
