LaGuardia began in 1929 as a small private seaplane base on Long Island Sound and grew into one of New York City's three major airports after its 1939 dedication. For decades it was infamous for cramped, outdated terminals — a reputation crystallized by Joe Biden's 2014 comparison to a 'third world country' airport — until a roughly $8 billion, decade-long rebuild (2016–2025) replaced nearly every terminal. A private 105-acre seaplane and airfield facility opens on the site, later expanded and renamed North Beach Airport.
