Airport HistoryEst. 1937
Nashville International Airport opened in 1937 as Berry Field, named for Tennessee WPA administrator Col. Harry S. Berry, and grew from a modest three-runway airfield into the busiest airport in Tennessee. Its IATA code BNA still reflects the original "Berry Field Nashville" name. Decades of terminal rebuilding culminated in the ongoing BNA Vision expansion program, as the airport set successive passenger records through the mid-2020s driven by Nashville's tourism and music-industry boom.
The airport opens on June 12, 1937, as Berry Field, built for $1.2 million with three asphalt runways, a three-story terminal, and two hangars; American Airlines and Eastern Air Lines begin DC-3 service that July.
A 145,000-square-foot terminal opens and jet service begins with American Airlines Boeing 720/720B aircraft.
A new terminal with three main concourses and a commuter concourse radiating from a three-story atrium is completed, and the airport is renamed Nashville International Airport/Berry Field.
A new parallel runway (2R/20L) opens, expanding the airport's capacity for simultaneous operations.
Following extensive 2006-2011 renovations, the terminal is renamed the Robert C. H. Mathews Jr. Terminal.
The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority launches the BNA Vision and New Horizon expansion programs to modernize and enlarge the airport for surging demand.
The bulk of the BNA Vision expansion program is completed, delivering expanded concourses and terminal facilities.
The airport handles roughly 25.7 million passengers in 2025, another consecutive annual record and confirmation of its status as the busiest airport in Tennessee.
