Airport HistoryEst. 1940

Portland International Airport opened on October 13, 1940, as Portland-Columbia Airport, developed with Works Progress Administration funding after the city outgrew its earlier Swan Island Municipal Airport. The airport became Alaska Airlines' largest hub and gateway to Oregon, and in 2024 opened a striking new mass-timber main terminal roof built largely from Oregon and Washington wood, reflecting the state's forestry heritage.

✦PDX's 2024 terminal renovation features a roof built from nine-layer mass timber sourced almost entirely from forests within about 300 miles of the airport, drawing international architectural attention.
✦The airport accounts for roughly 90% of Oregon's statewide passenger air traffic and over 95% of its air cargo.

Site Purchased

The Portland City Council purchases the 700-acre site for a new municipal airport, with the Port of Portland securing a $1.3 million Works Progress Administration grant for its Depression-era construction.

Portland-Columbia Airport Opens

The airport officially opens on October 13, 1940, replacing the increasingly obsolete Swan Island Municipal Airport (established 1926, dedicated by Charles Lindbergh in 1927).

Jet-Era Terminal and 'International' Designation

A modern jet-era terminal opens and 'International' is formally added to the airport's name, reflecting its growing role in transcontinental and international air travel.

Delta's Pacific Gateway

Delta Air Lines establishes a Pacific gateway hub at Portland, operating Asian routes until financial pressures and the 1997 Asian financial crisis lead to its withdrawal in 2001.

H-Shaped Terminal Completed

A new H-shaped terminal designed by Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Partnership is completed on September 10, 2001, modernizing the passenger experience.

2024
Mass-Timber Terminal Roof Opens

Phase one of an expanded main terminal, featuring an innovative roof built largely from regional mass timber sourced from Oregon and Washington forests, opens on August 14, 2024.
