Airport HistoryEst. 1930

Detroit's main airport traces its origins to Wayne County Airport, which opened on 4 September 1930 in Romulus, Michigan, and was renamed Detroit-Wayne Major Airport in 1947 as it grew into a significant regional hub. The airport's modern identity was shaped by Northwest Airlines, which established a major hub there after merging with Republic Airlines in 1986, a role Delta Air Lines inherited following its 2008 merger with Northwest. A major expansion came in 2002 with the opening of the McNamara Terminal, a large midfield terminal named for longtime Wayne County Executive Edward H. McNamara, which today serves as Delta's primary Midwest hub. The airport is now governed by the Wayne County Airport Authority, an independent body created by the Michigan Legislature in 2002.

✦The McNamara Terminal's 700-foot underground passenger tunnel between concourses, built in 2001, features a color-changing LED light show and was originally called the 'Motown Music Tunnel' for the Motown songs that played as travelers walked through it.

✦Detroit Metro won the J.D. Power award for highest customer satisfaction among 'mega' airports in 2023.

✦The airport's Northwest Airlines hub, established through the 1986 merger with Republic Airlines, was one of the carrier's largest connecting hubs until Northwest itself merged into Delta in 2008.

Wayne County Airport opens

The airport opened on 4 September 1930 in Romulus, Michigan, as Wayne County Airport, the predecessor of today's Detroit Metropolitan facility.

1947

Renamed and expanded

The airport was renamed Detroit-Wayne Major Airport and expanded to roughly four square miles as postwar commercial air travel grew.

1986

Northwest Airlines hub established

Northwest Orient Airlines merged with Republic Airlines to form Northwest Airlines, which built a major connecting hub at Detroit Metropolitan Airport that shaped the airport's route network for over two decades.

2002

McNamara Terminal opens

The Midfield Terminal — later named the McNamara Terminal after Wayne County Executive Edward H. McNamara — opened as a major new hub facility, featuring the now-famous 700-foot underground light-and-sound tunnel connecting its concourses.

Wayne County Airport Authority created

The Michigan Legislature passed Act 90, establishing the Wayne County Airport Authority as an independent body to operate Detroit Metropolitan, Willow Run, and related airports.

2008

Delta becomes primary hub carrier

Delta Air Lines' 2008 merger with Northwest Airlines led to Delta inheriting and consolidating the Detroit hub, which it continues to operate as one of its major connecting hubs.
