MSP began as Speedway Field, a 1919 airfield built on the site of a bankrupt auto racetrack near the Minnesota River. Renamed Wold-Chamberlain Field in 1923 in honor of two Minnesota World War I pilots, it grew through the 20th century into the primary air hub for the Twin Cities, eventually taking on 'International' status in its name by 1948. The Metropolitan Airports Commission has overseen its major postwar expansions, including the 1962 opening of what became the Lindbergh Terminal and the 1986/2001-rebuilt Humphrey Terminal. Long a Northwest Airlines and later Delta Air Lines hub, MSP was recognized by aviation analytics firm Cirium as the world's most punctual international airport in 2023.
The airfield was created on the site of a former, bankrupt Twin City Speedway auto racetrack, with a wooden airmail hangar added in 1920.
The airfield was renamed to honor Ernest Groves Wold and Cyrus Foss Chamberlain, two Minnesota aviators killed in World War I.
Regular commercial passenger service began at the field, following the Minneapolis Park Board's takeover of the site in 1928.
The airport's official name was updated to include 'International,' reflecting its growing role in cross-border air travel.
A new terminal (later renamed the Lindbergh Terminal) began operations on 21 January 1962, a $8.5 million, 600,000-square-foot facility with 24 gates.
A $250 million expansion added Concourses A and B on 1 June 2002, followed by a Concourse C extension later that year.
Aviation analytics firm Cirium recognized MSP as the world's most punctual international airport, citing on-time rates exceeding 84%.
