Airline Identity
History
Aeroflot traces its roots to 1923, when Soviet authorities approved the expansion of civil aviation that grew into the state airline, formally adopting the Aeroflot name in 1932. For decades it was the sole carrier of the USSR, combining commercial, military and scientific aviation functions; after the 1991 Soviet collapse it was broken up into roughly 400 regional 'Babyflot' carriers, with the parent retaining international routes as its fleet shrank from thousands of aircraft to about 115 by 1996. It later restructured as a joint-stock company majority-owned by the Russian state.
Current Operations
Aeroflot's network has contracted sharply since Russia's February 2022 invasion of Ukraine: Western nations closed their airspace to Russian carriers, the EU placed Aeroflot on its air-safety ban list, and the US barred servicing of its Boeing aircraft, forcing the airline to source parts from non-sanctioning countries and pursue Russian-built aircraft such as the Yakovlev MC-21 (deliveries expected from 2026). It now flies mainly domestic Russian routes plus a limited set of international destinations including Armenia, Azerbaijan, China, India, the UAE and Vietnam, operating roughly 170 Airbus and Boeing aircraft (excluding subsidiaries) from its Sheremetyevo hub in Moscow.
