Airport HistoryEst. 1973

Xinjiang's main gateway opened to foreign passengers in 1973 as Ürümqi Diwopu International Airport and grew through repeated terminal expansions — Terminal 2 in 2002 and a capacity-tripling Terminal 3 in 2009 — into one of northwest China's busiest hubs. In March 2025 it was officially renamed Ürümqi Tianshan International Airport, and the following month it opened a huge new Terminal 4, part of an expansion that helped it carry over 29 million passengers in 2025.

✦As the main air hub of Xinjiang in far northwest China, the airport plays an outsized logistical role given the region's vast distances and limited rail/road links to the rest of the country.
✦The 2025 renaming from 'Diwopu' to 'Tianshan' (after the Tian Shan mountain range) accompanied the opening of its largest-ever terminal expansion.

Airport Opens to Foreign Passengers

The airport, then known as Ürümqi Diwopu International Airport, opens to foreign passenger traffic; an original terminal facility becomes operational the following year.

First Modern Runway Built

The airport's first runway (07/25) is constructed to a 4E flight-zone standard with a length of 3,600 metres; construction of a new Terminal 2 also begins this year.

Terminal 2 Opens

Terminal 2 opens on 12 May 2002 after an eight-year construction period.

2009
Terminal 3 Opens

Terminal 3, built at a cost of 2.8 billion yuan since April 2007, opens, roughly tripling the airport's passenger handling capacity from about 5.13 million to 16.35 million a year.

Metro Connection

Ürümqi Metro Line 1 begins serving the airport on 25 October, giving it a direct rail link to the city.

Renamed Ürümqi Tianshan International Airport

In March 2025 the airport is officially renamed from Ürümqi Diwopu International Airport to Ürümqi Tianshan International Airport.

Terminal 4 Opens

A large new Terminal 4 (North Terminal), covering roughly 400,000 square metres with 177 gates and originally planned for 2017–2024, officially opens on 17 April 2025.

29 Million Passengers

The airport handles 29,179,737 passengers in 2025, ranking as China's 18th-busiest airport by passenger traffic.
