Tolmachevo opened in 1957 with the Soviet Union's first Tupolev Tu-104 jet service to Moscow and grew into Siberia's principal aviation hub. Privatized and modernized after the Soviet collapse, it is now managed by the Novaport group and serves as the largest hub for S7 Airlines outside Moscow, though its international route network has been reshaped since 2022 by Western airspace closures to Russian carriers.
Operations begin on 12 July 1957 with the inaugural passenger flight, a Tupolev Tu-104 jet to Moscow, launched under the Ministry of Civil Aviation of the USSR.
Following the dissolution of the USSR, the airport transitions out of direct Soviet state control; in 1995 it becomes a joint-stock company with 51% state ownership.
The domestic terminal is fully renovated and Tolmachevo becomes the first Russian airport to receive ISO 9002-96 certification.
The Novaport group assumes operational management of the airport, a role it continues to hold.
Between 2014 and 2015 the international and domestic terminals are merged, roughly doubling passenger-handling capacity.
