Airport HistoryEst. 1979
Harbin's main airport opened in 1979 as Yanjiagang Airport, replacing the Japanese-built Harbin Majiagou Airport that dated to 1931. Granted international status in 1984 with early flights to Russia reflecting the city's historic ties to its northern neighbor, it has since undergone major expansions — including a dedicated domestic Terminal 2 in 2018 and a second runway in 2025 — to become one of northeastern China's key aviation gateways.
The airport is built as Yanjiagang Airport, replacing the older Harbin Majiagou Airport, which had originally been built by Japan in 1931.
The airport receives international designation and begins international flights, initially to Russia, reflecting Harbin's historical role as a gateway to the Russian Far East.
A large-scale expansion runs from 1994 to 1997, costing roughly 960 million RMB, substantially increasing the airport's capacity.
Annual passenger traffic surpasses 10 million for the first time.
A new domestic-only Terminal 2 opens on April 30, 2018, while international flights are relocated to a separate facility undergoing redevelopment, splitting the airport into a two-terminal domestic/international system.
A second runway (05R/23L), 3,600 meters long, opens on January 23, 2025, alongside the original 3,200-meter runway that has been in use since 1979.
The airport handles 24,650,717 passengers, ranking as the 22nd-busiest airport in mainland China and serving 97 destinations (85 domestic, 12 international).
