History
Brussels Airlines was formed in 2006 through the merger of SN Brussels Airlines and Virgin Express, beginning operations under its current name in March 2007. SN Brussels Airlines had itself been created in 2002 from the remnants of Sabena, Belgium's original flag carrier, which collapsed into bankruptcy in 2001. Brussels Airlines inherited the SN IATA code from Sabena/SN Brussels Airlines and joined Star Alliance in 2009.
Current Operations
Brussels Airlines operates a European short/medium-haul network from its Brussels Airport hub alongside long-haul routes to Africa and North America, with a particular strength in sub-Saharan African destinations. Lufthansa Group first took a stake in the airline in 2009 and acquired it outright in January 2017, and Brussels Airlines now operates as one of the group's network carriers alongside Lufthansa, SWISS and Austrian Airlines.
