History
Austrian Airlines' lineage traces to Österreichische Luftverkehrs AG (ÖLAG), founded in 1923, but post-war Austrian civil aviation restarted only in 1957 when Air Austria and Austrian Airways merged to form the modern Austrian Airlines, launching scheduled flights in March 1958. The carrier grew into Austria's flag carrier and merged with regional partners Tyrolean Airways and Lauda Air in the 2000s. Following financial difficulties, Lufthansa Group acquired Austrian Airlines in September 2009, and it has operated as one of the group's hub carriers since.
Current Operations
Austrian Airlines operates a short/medium-haul European network plus a smaller set of long-haul routes to the Middle East, Asia and North America from its Vienna hub, positioning itself as a specialist gateway to Central and Eastern Europe. As part of the Lufthansa Group it coordinates fleet planning, sales and network scheduling with sister carriers Lufthansa, SWISS, Brussels Airlines and Eurowings, and operates a mixed Airbus, Boeing and Embraer fleet.
