Cologne Bonn Airport grew out of a Luftwaffe airfield built in 1938 at Wahn, which British occupation forces expanded after World War II before it opened to civilian traffic in 1950. It is officially named after Konrad Adenauer, West Germany's first postwar Chancellor and a native of Cologne. The airport became an early long-haul hub — Lufthansa launched transatlantic service to New York in 1961 — and later evolved into a major low-cost and cargo hub, hosting Germanwings' founding in 2002 and serving as a European base for UPS and FedEx. Today it is Germany's seventh-busiest airport by passengers and one of its largest cargo gateways.
Following its origins as a Luftwaffe airfield and postwar RAF base at Wahn, the site reopened for scheduled civilian aviation.
Lufthansa began intercontinental service from Cologne/Bonn to New York City, establishing the airport's first long-haul route.
