History
Japan Airlines was founded on 1 August 1951 as a government-backed enterprise to rebuild Japanese air transport after World War II, became the country's designated flag carrier in 1953, and was fully privatized in 1987. After absorbing Japan Air System in a 2002 merger, JAL filed for bankruptcy protection in January 2010; under a restructuring led by Kazuo Inamori it shed debt, cut unprofitable routes, and re-listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in September 2012.
Current Operations
JAL operates both domestic and international networks from dual Tokyo hubs at Haneda and Narita, with Kansai and Itami serving as secondary bases in Osaka, covering destinations across Japan as well as Asia, the Americas, Europe and Oceania. As a Oneworld member it flies a mixed fleet of Boeing and Airbus widebodies and narrowbodies, and in recent years has continued fleet renewal (including 787 and A350 aircraft) while expanding international codeshare and alliance partnerships.
