History
Aer Lingus was founded by the Irish government in 1936 as the country's national airline, operating its first flight between Dublin and Bristol that year. It was a full member of the oneworld alliance from 1999 but withdrew in 2007 to pursue an independent, hybrid low-cost strategy. The Irish state privatised its shareholding in stages between 2006 and 2015, after which International Airlines Group (IAG) took full control, completing its acquisition in September 2015.
Current Operations
Aer Lingus operates a European short-haul network alongside transatlantic long-haul routes from Dublin to North America, using an all-Airbus fleet (A320-family aircraft plus A321LR and A330 widebodies on long-haul routes). As part of IAG it operates alongside British Airways, Iberia and Vueling, sharing some corporate functions while retaining its own brand, and it does not currently belong to a global airline alliance.
