History
Malaysia Airlines traces its roots to Malayan Airways Limited, incorporated in 1937 and beginning scheduled commercial service in 1947. Following Malaysia's formation and Singapore's 1965 separation, the carrier split into separate Malaysian and Singaporean airlines, with the Malaysian side becoming Malaysian Airline System (MAS) in 1972. After financial troubles and the tragic losses of flights MH370 (2014) and MH17 (2014), the airline was renationalized and restructured, re-emerging as Malaysia Airlines Berhad under Khazanah Nasional in 2015.
Current Operations
Malaysia Airlines operates from its main hub at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, with Kota Kinabalu serving as a secondary base for Borneo routes, flying a mixed short, medium and long-haul network across Asia, Europe and Oceania on a fleet of Boeing 737-800/MAX narrowbodies alongside Airbus A330 and A350 widebodies. As a Oneworld member, it has returned to profitability in recent years after a long restructuring period, and parent Malaysia Aviation Group has outlined fleet-growth and service-quality targets through 2030.
