History
EVA Air was established in March 1989 as an aviation affiliate of the Evergreen Group, the Taiwanese shipping and logistics conglomerate founded by Chang Yung-fa, taking advantage of Taiwan's 1987 liberalization of its air transport market that ended China Airlines' monopoly on international flying. The airline began commercial operations on 1 July 1991 with three Boeing 767-300ER aircraft, initially serving regional Asian routes before rapidly expanding into long-haul markets across Europe, North America, and Oceania. It built a strong reputation for service quality and product innovation, notably launching a widely copied premium economy class, and became Taiwan's second-largest carrier behind China Airlines. EVA Air joined Star Alliance on 18 June 2013, becoming a key Taiwanese link in the global alliance network and continuing to earn a Skytrax 5-star rating for its service standards.
Current Operations
EVA Air operates a mixed widebody and narrowbody fleet including Airbus A321neo and A330 aircraft alongside Boeing 777s and increasingly Boeing 787 Dreamliners, including newer 787-10s, with its regional subsidiary UNI Air operating ATR 72 turboprops for domestic Taiwan services. The airline serves more than 40 international destinations across Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America from its principal hub at Taoyuan International Airport near Taipei, with a secondary base at Kaohsiung via UNI Air. As a Star Alliance member and Taiwan's second-largest airline, EVA Air maintains an all-international long-haul network complemented by codeshares with alliance partners, and continues to modernize its widebody fleet with ongoing 787 Dreamliner deliveries. It remains closely affiliated with the Evergreen Group and is consistently ranked among the world's top airlines for service quality.
