Airport HistoryEst. 1958

Hohhot's Baita International Airport (named for a nearby historic White Pagoda) opened in 1958 as a bare-bones facility with a single dirt runway and a handful of tents, growing over subsequent decades into Inner Mongolia's principal air gateway. Despite two major expansions and a new terminal in 2007, the airport is now increasingly hemmed in by the growing city, and a successor facility, Hohhot Shengle International Airport, is under construction to eventually take over its role.

✦The airport is named after the historic 'White Pagoda' (Baita), a nearby Liao-dynasty-era Buddhist pagoda dating back roughly a thousand years.
✦A successor airport, Hohhot Shengle International Airport in Horinger County, is under construction and is planned to eventually replace Baita, though as of 2026 Baita remains fully operational.

Airport Opens

The airport opened October 1, 1958, with a single 1,500-by-100-meter dirt runway, three single-story buildings, and five tents.

1985
Early Expansions

The airport underwent two significant expansions during the mid-1980s and 1990s as regional air travel demand grew.

2007
New Terminal Opens

A new 54,499-square-meter terminal with 11 jet bridges and capacity for 3 million annual passengers was completed in June 2007, alongside a lengthened, widened runway able to accommodate aircraft as large as the Airbus A380.

2008
Beijing Olympics Diversion Hub

The airport served as a diversion hub for flights during the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics.

2025
Cargo Record Set

The airport handled 12.7 million passengers and, for the first time, exceeded 60,000 metric tons of cargo in 2025.
