Airport HistoryEst. 1990

Ningbo Lishe International Airport opened in 1990 as the first civil-only airport in Zhejiang province, giving the port city of Ningbo its own dedicated air gateway. Over three decades it grew from a single small terminal handling under 300,000 passengers a year into a modern two-terminal international airport serving over 16 million passengers annually. The airport has undergone several renaming, expansion, and renovation cycles, most recently completing a new T2 terminal and reopening a renovated T1.

✦The airport's growth rate historically averaged around 18% annually for passengers and nearly 20% for cargo in its early decades.
1990
Airport Opens

Ningbo Airport officially opens to the public on June 30, 1990, becoming the first civil-only airport in Zhejiang province, following central government approval in 1985.

1992
International Service Begins

Direct international flights to Hong Kong commence in July 1992, marking the airport's first international route.

2002
Terminal 1 Opens

A new T1 terminal opens on October 8, 2002, with capacity for 3.8 million annual passengers and 16 departure gates.

2005
Renamed Ningbo Lishe International Airport

The airport is officially renamed Ningbo Lishe International Airport on November 29, 2005.

2019
Terminal 2 Opens

T2 terminal officially opens on December 29, 2019, and the older T1 terminal closes simultaneously for major renovation.

2023
Cargo Plane Runway Excursion

On August 7, 2023, a Kalitta Air Boeing 747-481F freighter arriving from Anchorage suffers a runway excursion on landing; the airport closes temporarily but no injuries are reported.

2023
Renovated Terminal 1 Reopens

Following renovation work that began in April 2022, T1 terminal officially reopens on December 22, 2023.
