History
Scandinavian Airlines System was formed in 1946 as a consortium pooling the intercontinental operations of Swedish, Norwegian and Danish carriers, and the three national airlines fully merged into a single company, SAS, in 1951. It became a co-founding member of Star Alliance in 1997 and long served as the flag carrier of Denmark, Norway and Sweden. In 2022, mounting losses and pandemic-era debt pushed SAS to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States, and it exited that process in 2024 under new ownership and financing.
Current Operations
SAS operates a European short/medium-haul network centered on its three Scandinavian hubs, alongside a smaller number of long-haul routes to North America and Asia, using a mixed Airbus fleet. As part of its 2022–2024 restructuring, SAS left Star Alliance and joined SkyTeam in September 2024, aligning itself commercially with Air France-KLM.
