History

Juneyao Airlines (branded Juneyao Air) was established in 2005 as a subsidiary of the Shanghai Juneyao (Group) Co., Ltd conglomerate and began flight operations in September 2006, becoming one of China's earliest privately owned scheduled airlines. The carrier listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange in May 2015, with state-owned China Eastern Air Holding later acquiring a 7% stake in 2019. Juneyao launched low-cost subsidiary 9 Air in January 2015 and expanded into widebody, intercontinental flying with its first Boeing 787-9 delivery in October 2018, followed by a landmark Shanghai–Helsinki route in June 2019 that made it the first Chinese private carrier to fly intercontinental widebody service. It became a Star Alliance Connecting Partner in May 2017, deepening ties with global carriers while remaining outside full alliance membership.

Current Operations

Juneyao Air operates a mixed Airbus A320-family and Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner fleet, flying more than 220 destinations across East Asia, Southeast Asia, Europe and Australia as of 2026, with its network centered on Shanghai's Hongqiao and Pudong airports. The airline maintains codeshare and partnership agreements with carriers including Air China, China Eastern, ANA, EVA Air, Finnair and Singapore Airlines, and holds stakes in ventures such as Sanya International Airlines. In July 2025 Juneyao stepped in to operate the Singapore–Wuxi route after Jetstar Asia exited that market, and the airline placed a fresh order for 25 additional A320-family aircraft in December 2025 to support continued network growth. Juneyao remains one of China's most consistently profitable privately held airlines, still controlled by the Shanghai Juneyao Group.
