Airport HistoryEst. 1990

Wenzhou's airport opened in 1990 as the modest Wenzhou Yongqiang Airport, funded by the municipal government to connect the coastal Zhejiang trading city to Shanghai, Wuhan, Chengdu, and Ningbo. Steady expansions and a 2013 upgrade to international status transformed it into Wenzhou Longwan International Airport, which today operates intercontinental routes to European cities including Rome, Milan, and Madrid.

✦Wenzhou marked 35 years of continuous airport service in 2025, dating to its original 1990 opening as Yongqiang Airport.
✦Despite being only the 35th-busiest airport in mainland China, Wenzhou Longwan punches above its weight with direct routes to three major European cities.
1987
Construction Begins

Construction began in 1987 to domestic Class II airport standards, funded by Wenzhou's municipal government at a cost of RMB 132.5 million.

1990
Airport Opens as Yongqiang Airport

The airport opened July 12, 1990, as Wenzhou Yongqiang Airport, launching four initial routes to Shanghai, Wuhan, Chengdu, and Ningbo.

2008
New Terminal Built

A new 36,500-square-meter terminal entered service in 2008, substantially expanding on the original 1994-renovated facility.

2013
Renamed Wenzhou Longwan International Airport

On April 25, 2013, the airport was renamed Wenzhou Longwan International Airport after achieving international status, with a new 3,200-meter runway opening that October to enable larger aircraft operations.

2018
Terminal 2 Opens

Terminal 2 opened in 2018 with capacity for 13 million annual passengers.

2019
Air-Rail Connectivity

The airport gained direct rail connectivity via the S1 metropolitan railway line in September 2019.

2025
Intercontinental Routes and Traffic Milestone

By 2025 the airport handled just over 13 million passengers annually while operating intercontinental service to Rome, Milan, and Madrid — a striking reach for a mid-sized regional Chinese airport.
