Sanya Phoenix International Airport opened in 1994 to serve the tropical resort city of Sanya on Hainan Island, quickly becoming southern Hainan's gateway for both domestic and international tourism. Built with a long runway capable of handling wide-body jets, it grew from a regional facility into one of China's busiest resort airports, now the second-busiest in Hainan province after Haikou Meilan. Its growth has been closely tied to the rise of Hainan as a duty-free tourism and, more recently, free-trade-port destination.

1994
Airport Opens

Sanya Phoenix International Airport opens on July 1, 1994, in Tianya, about 15 km northwest of Sanya city center, with a runway long enough to handle Boeing 747 and Airbus A340 aircraft.

2007
First Transcontinental Route from Hainan

Sanya becomes the first airport in Hainan to launch a transcontinental service, with Transaero Airlines beginning flights to Moscow, opening the island to Russian long-haul tourism.

2015
High-Speed Rail Station Opens

A railway station on the Hainan Western Ring High-Speed Railway opens at the airport, integrating it into the island's intercity rail network.

2017
Russian Carrier Expansion

Additional Russian airlines expand service to Sanya from 2017 onward, significantly boosting the airport's international tourism traffic.

Record Annual Traffic

The airport handles about 22.7 million passengers and over 117,000 tonnes of cargo in 2025, ranking as the 24th-busiest airport in China.
