Airport HistoryEst. 1997
Guiyang Longdongbao opened in 1997 to serve the capital of Guizhou Province in southwest China and took its current name in 2006. Rapid regional growth pushed passenger numbers well past its original design capacity within little more than a decade, driving a major 2010s expansion, and in 2019 the airport gained its first long-haul international route.
Guiyang's new airport opens on 28 May 1997, replacing older facilities and giving Guizhou Province a modern civil aviation gateway.
On 19 January 2006 the airport adopts its current name, Guiyang Longdongbao International Airport.
Passenger traffic (5.7 million in 2009) exceeds the airport's original 5-million design capacity, prompting a 3.4-billion-yuan expansion approved in September 2010 to lift capacity toward 15.5 million passengers and 220,000 tonnes of cargo annually.
Annual traffic reaches roughly 15.1 million passengers, reflecting the airport's growing role as a regional hub in southwest China.
In June 2017 the airport implements an Airport Collaborative Decision Making (A-CDM) system to improve operational efficiency; by year-end traffic reaches about 18.1 million passengers, ranking 22nd busiest in mainland China.
In March 2019 Hainan Airlines launches a weekly service to Paris, opening Guiyang and Guizhou Province to long-haul international air travel for the first time.
