History
Germanwings was established in 2002 as a low-cost spin-off of Lufthansa's Eurowings unit, becoming a wholly owned Lufthansa subsidiary in 2009 and expanding rapidly between 2013 and 2015 as it took over short-haul routes from Lufthansa's mainline network. The airline is also remembered as the operator of Germanwings Flight 9525, which crashed in the French Alps in March 2015.
Current Operations
Germanwings no longer operates as an independent airline: Lufthansa Group began folding its flying into the Eurowings brand from October 2015, Germanwings stopped using its own "4U" flight numbers and IATA code in March 2018, and its air operator's certificate was formally closed in April 2020 amid the COVID-19 downturn. Former Germanwings routes and aircraft are now flown under the Eurowings brand within Lufthansa Group.
