History
Transavia France was established on 14 November 2006 as a joint venture between Air France and the Netherlands' Transavia (itself a KLM subsidiary), beginning commercial flights in May 2007 as a low-cost complement to Air France's full-service network. Based at Paris-Orly Airport, the airline was created to let the Air France-KLM group compete with Europe's fast-growing budget carriers such as easyJet and Ryanair without diluting the parent airlines' premium branding. It rebranded in 2015, dropping ".com" from its name and refreshing its livery, and expanded its base network through the following decade, opening additional bases at Lyon and Nantes in 2018 and Montpellier in 2020. By 2022 Transavia France had grown to around 100 destinations from Orly, making it the largest low-cost operator at that airport by route count. The carrier remains wholly owned by Air France-KLM and operates as the group's dedicated low-cost arm within France, alongside its larger Dutch sister airline.
Current Operations
Transavia France operates a fleet built around Boeing 737-800s that is now transitioning to the Airbus A320neo family, with new-generation deliveries beginning in 2024 as part of a broader Air France-KLM fleet renewal. The airline serves roughly 100 leisure and metropolitan destinations across Europe and North Africa from its main base at Paris-Orly, supplemented by secondary bases at Lyon and Nantes. It operates independently of the SkyTeam alliance, positioned instead as Air France-KLM's low-cost point-to-point brand aimed at price-sensitive leisure travelers. In 2024 Skytrax named it runner-up for Best Low-Cost Airline in Europe, reflecting its continued growth against pan-European budget rivals.
