London Luton Airport opened as Luton Municipal Airport on July 16, 1938, and after wartime RAF use became a major base for Britain's 1960s package-holiday boom. Decades of underinvestment through the 1980s gave way to renewed growth once easyJet, Ryanair, and later Wizz Air made it a low-cost carrier stronghold, and it now ranks among the busiest airports serving London.
The airport officially opens on July 16, 1938, opened by the Secretary of State for Air, Kingsley Wood.
By 1969, roughly a fifth of all UK holiday charter flights depart from Luton, driven by operators like Clarksons Travel and Court Line.
